Air Battles in WW2 were very dangerous because the pilots were several thousands feet up and were equipped with weapons. Both the Allies and the Axis Powers had access to these planes, and they were able to shoot each other down. Most planes were armed with weaponry to shoot down other planes. The United States had built many planes, and over the span of ww2, the planes that were constructed were being upgraded to withstand more fire from other planes. Some planes that were made and used by the U.S. were the B-29 Superforteress, F4U Corsair, and the B-17 Flyingfortress. There were many more planes that were used during ww2, though the B-29 Superfortress was known as the airplane that dropped an atomic bomb onto Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945.

In WW2, planes were used in combat and were used by both sides of the war. Some battles were fought only in the air, such as the Battle of Kursk, The Dieppe Raid, and the Black Friday Battle. The Battle of Kursk was a major air battle that occurred during WW2, but was also a really large battle that was fought by tanks. This battle as the Norwich University states, "was considered to be the costliest single day of aerial combat that ultimately ended in a crippling defeat for the Germans." (10 Largest Air To Air Battles, 2017). This battle was well-known for its success of defeating the Germans and because of the huge loss of lives during the fight. There were also many more battles that were fought in the air, but the Battle of Kursk was one of the deadliest and most successful, but was also well-known by many. Though, battles in the air were not the only ways to fight, both sides of the war fought over the sea and over land with many different weapons, troops, and devices to overwhelm the enemy.
